Solar thermal panels absorb the heat from the sun and uses it to heat up water for use in the home.
Solar thermal panels should provide most of your hot water from April to September, and make a worthwhile difference during the winter months.
All in all you can expect solar thermal panels to contribute about half of your hot water needs.
A solar thermal system works by conducting the heat energy contained within sunlight to a heat transfer fluid within a solar collector which in turn exchanges its heat energy to the main heating system.
The two most common forms of solar collectors are flat plate collectors and evacuated tubes with the latter being the most efficient.
